Position Summary
The Finance Director at Word of Grace Church serves as a key leader in stewarding the financial resources entrusted to our ministry. This role oversees church-wide financial operations, ensuring accuracy, transparency, timely reporting, and alignment with mission and legal requirements. The Finance Director provides strategic financial guidance to empower ministry leaders, maintains healthy internal controls and compliance standards, and supports long-term stability through thoughtful planning and risk management. In addition, the Finance Director ensures proper administration of payroll, benefits, and HR records, contributing to a thriving and organized ministry environment.
Key Role
The heart of this role is to support gospel effectiveness through trustworthy stewardship. The Finance Director helps ensure that every dollar invested in ministry is handled with integrity, clarity, and purpose—serving the church family and advancing the mission of Word of Grace. Through collaboration with pastoral staff, volunteer teams, and outside professionals, this role upholds financial excellence so ministry can flourish.
#1: Financial Management & Reporting
The Finance Director will:
- Oversee and manage all financial resources and processes
- Prepare monthly and annual financial statements for staff, leadership, and the congregation
- Maintain cash flow management, reserve strength, and long-term financial stability
- Collaborate with pastors and staff to resource ministry strategies with financial clarity
- Ensure the Financial Secretary is trained, supported, and held to high standards of accuracy and accountability
- Review and sign off on Financial Secretary work as part of healthy internal controls
- Ensure software and systems operate efficiently and transparently to support financial objectives
#2: Budget Leadership & Strategic Planning
The Finance Director will:
- Lead the annual budget planning process
- Provide ongoing monitoring and variance analysis to ensure alignment with ministry goals
- Forecast future needs and opportunities for wise ministry expansion and sustainability
- Resource leadership with financial insights for strategic decision-making
#3: Compliance, Risk & Internal Controls
The Finance Director will:
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local nonprofit regulations
- Maintain relationships with external accounting, tax, and legal partners
- Oversee strong internal controls, record retention, and audit readiness
- Maintain current finance procedures documenting all responsibilities
- Oversee insurance coverage to ensure competitive pricing and adequate protection
- Support policy creation and central documentation, including annual review cycles
#4: HR Administration & Support
The Finance Director will:
- Manage employee benefits, payroll-related compliance, and secure personnel records
- Participate in staff meetings as needed and as agreed with the Lead Pastor
- Provide support and clarity on HR-related questions and documentation
Qualifications & Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or equivalent experience
- Knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP) and IRS regulations
- Skilled with accounting software and Microsoft Office tools
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- High integrity, stewardship, and confidentiality
- Strategic mindset with exceptional attention to detail
